Abstract

Drama studies in recent decades have greatly benefited from new linguistic areas known as discourse analysis and pragmatics. Drama as dialogue exhibits interpersonal exchanges between conversational participants. This interactional aspect of drama can be explained through examination of turn-taking system between characters. Vimala Herman demonstrates how in drama the analysis of turn-taking strategies and topic management used by characters relates to the reader/audience‗s interpre- tation of the character and situation. This article by applying her model to a scene taken from Sam Shepard‗s play True West attempts to indicate that discerning turn-taking patterns can help us distinguish the roles and functions of the characters in the play and explain the situations that are evoked by these characters.
