Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to introduce a new emotional regulation measurement into Turkish language. In this regard, reliability and validity of the Emotion Regulation Skills Questionnaire was examined. Methods: In total 275 university students (165 female and 110 male) participated and completed Emotion Regulation Skills Questionnaire (ERSQ), Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS), Experience in Close Relationship Scale-II (ECRS-II) and SCL-90. Results: In the reliability study, the Cronbach’s alpha for the total scale was 0.89 and for subscales, it was between 0.49 and 0.75. It was also found that item-total correlations for each sub-scale were higher than 0.30. Additionally, in the validity study, the whole scale and sub-scales were mostly revealed significant correlations at .01 statistical significant level with each other and variables used for criterion validity. Accordingly, ERSQ total scale showed -0.27 correlation with ECRS-II anxiety and -0.28 with Avoidance, -0.34 with mean score of SCL-90 general symptom index. There was also a correlation between ERSQ total score and subscale scores of DERS. Conclusion: To sum up, the results suggest that the reliability and validity of the Turkish form of ERSQ were at a satisfactory level.
