Abstract

Turkey, a country of 65 million inhabitants. is localed in two continents: Asia and Europe. It has strong links with other European countries. The number of ‘ancer patients annually is approximately 166.666 (incidence lRO/ 1@&m ~“ti+fltS). Cancer pair. and palliative care has been popularized in Turkey for IO yean. In 1986, the Pain Unit ol Mcdicai Faculty of Istanbul University was established a.s an outpatient clinic. In 1990. inpatient facilities were atab lished. In 1996, the Supreme Council of Education approved pain medicine as Algology and a Departmeut of Algology was established in the Medical Faculty of Istanbul University. Today, this clinic has I5 beds with all facilities. including an operation theater, lluoroscopy unit. and radiofrequency lesion generators. Three thousand new patients are accepted each year. Abom 36% of all patients are caucer paiu patients referred from different disciplines, inchldiug oncology. Turkey is oue of the very few cuuntritx in which algolagy, pain medicine, has been approved as a separate discipline in medicine.
