Abstract

This paper is a comparative study of the processes that took place in the construction of community-based rural tourism (CBRT) initiatives and their actual management through the perceptions of stakeholders, based on observation and results obtained during fieldwork. The research focused of four CBRT initiatives in Mexico and used a qualitative and participatory methodology. We were able to identify some key aspects that positively and negatively influenced the tourism initiatives, some of which are common and others specific to each process. Additionally, the research showed the relationship between the construction process of the initiatives and their actual management, highlighting the importance of local participation, social cohesion and community social capital as key factors of success for CBRT.
