Abstract

After four years of war in Europe, the German Imperial Army collapsed unexpectedly in the autumn of 1918 after a series of formidable, yet unsuccessful offensives. Emperor Wilhelm II abdicated and fled to the Netherlands, which had remained neutral throughout the war, and was granted asylum by the Dutch government. In the ensuing confusion, intensified by the deprivations and dislocation caused by the war, leftwing revolutionaries believed that the time had finally come for Germany to follow the revolutionary path initiated by the Bolsheviks in Russia. Fighting broke out between rival political groups in several cities, and it seemed that the newly proclaimed Weimar Republic would soon give way to anarchy, revolution and civil war.KeywordsPolice ForceDutch GovernmentTurbulent TimeNational ReserveMunicipal PoliceThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
