Abstract

Turbulent flow in pipes is of great importance in industrial applications in many branches of engineering. Due to its simple geometry, the flow in straight pipes has been investigated in detail by means of direct numerical simulation, see [13, 5, 6, 14]. Curved or helically coiled pipes are frequently used in order to save space or to satisfy geometric requirements, but also due to the beneficial characteristics of the induced secondary flow, which influences the heat and mass transfer.
