Abstract

The article presents a survey of turbot catches of different countries fishing in the Baltic Sea during 1995-1998. Much attention is paid to the analysis of the Lithuanian fishermen catches at the Lithuanian coastal zone and in the open sea. The influence of fishery business on dimensional and sexual structure of turbot population and on the abundance of juveniles on the shore has been analysed. There has been established a high dependence of mesh sizes on turbot length, as well as the catching percentage in different mesh size nets. The effectiveness of nets used in commercial and experimental fishing has been assessed, which consequently showed the intensive turbot migration towards the coast during spawning. One hour catches with trawling have revealed a different turbot distribution in different places of the Lithuanian coastal zone.
