Abstract

Extended partial-response maximum-likelihood (EPRML) detection outperforms PRML on very high density magnetic recording channels. However, EPRML detection is much more complex than PRML and is difficult to implement at high data rates. Turbo-PRML is a compromise EPRML detector which comprises a conventional PRML detector plus a digital circuit operating on the PRML outputs. A bit-by-bit simulation is presented that confirms the expected performance gains over PRML.< <ETX xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">></ETX>
