Abstract

A technique for the determination of the particle number and particle size distribution of a latex is described based upon the use of turbidity measurements. The turbidimetric method yields results which are in agreement with other commonly accepted measurement techniques, is no more sensitive to usual experimental error, and does not exhibit multiple solutions as reported by other investigators. The technique can also be used to determine the refractive index of the latex particles, which may be different than the refractive index of a film cast from the latex. Equipment for the on-line application of this technique is described and shown to give satisfactory performance during a latex polymerization.
