Abstract

It is shown that vacuum tunnelling in a spontaneously broken gauge theory is induced by field configurations for the scalar field, built out of the nonintegrable phase factors introduced by Wu and Yang. The action for this process is the lowest possible in each sector of the topological charge. Possible effects of quantum fluctuations around this configuration are briefly discussed.
