Abstract

The headrace tunnels 2 and 3 at the Vietas hydro power station, Swedish Lapland, penetrate the lower nappes of the Scandinavian Caledonides as well as the Precambrian basement. Various geological features have influenced the alignment and the excavation and also have partially determined the shape of the tunnels. High rock stress effects have occurred and stress measurements have been carried out in both tunnels. The relationshio between the geological structures and the state of stress indicates that the stress is of tectonic origin and that it has been induced by forces that are still active.
