Abstract

MgO: xMn2+ (0.001 ≤ x ≤ 0.01) phosphors are prepared by solid-state reaction method and their structural and optical properties were investigated. The prepared samples are characterized through XRD, SEM, XPS, UV–Visible spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL). Red emission band of MgO: xMn 2+ phosphor is observed in the range of 550–700 nm. The optimal Mn2+ ion concentration in MgO: xMn2+ phosphor is ∼ 5 mol%. The luminous mechanism of Mn2+ ion in MgO: xMn2+ phosphor is explained by 4T 1 (G) → 6 A 1(S) transition of the Mn2+ ion and defects of MgO.
