Abstract
ABSTRACT With the advent of a number of promising new secondary extragalactic distance indicators, the reliaable calibration of the Cepheid distance scale becomes increasingly imperative. Ongoing observational programs (both from the ground and space) promise to provide a significantly larger sample of galaxies with well-studied Cepheids both within the Local Group and in more distant galaxies. In this review I describe recent efforts in the calibration of the Cepheid distance scale using Cepheids in star clusters in the Galaxy and in the Magellanic Clouds. I emphasize some of the important advantages of using LMC Cepheids in particular, and summarize the current status of the field. Some of the complications involved in the methods discussed to calibrate the Cepheid distance scale are also described along with suggestions for future work.
