Abstract

A negative pion beam line has been designed and built at the TRIUMF cyclotron in Vancouver for the investigation of the clinical usefulness of π − messons in cancer therapy. The clinical application has dictated a number of special conditions that must be met by the resulting beam. The channel has now been tuned to satisfy these conditions and a systematic procedure for tuning has been developed. The characteristics of the channel are shown to be in general agreement with the design characteristics as predicted by TRANSPORT 1).
