Abstract

The pure shear mode can achieve a large and stable deformation in the actuation of dielectric elastomers (DEs). In this paper, based on our previously designed deformation controller, we propose the method of tuning two inplane stresses and applied voltage/charge to realize precise pure shear deformation, by deducing the governing equations of voltage- and charge-loaded DEs. The evolution of electromechanical stabilities of voltage- and charge-loaded DEs under pure shear deformation mode is considered. The maximum stable electromechanical deformation related to electromechanical failures is simultaneously calculated. It is found that the stable deformation and parameter variation tendency have different dependency for the loading modes of DEs. The critical conditions of occurrence of possible electromechanical failures are also clarified. This research can be utilized to beforehand select the tension stresses and applied voltage/charge to strengthen the electromechanical stability of DEs in pure shear deformation mode.
