Abstract

Tumours of the alimentary canal account for a rather smaller proportion of cancer overall than in many countries. Carcinoma of the mouth and oropharynx is unusual. Salivary tumours overall are about as common as in other countries but are found relatively more frequently outside the parotid gland than in Caucasian peoples. The palate and submandibular gland are frequently the site of tumours. Tumours of the oesophagus are found in Buganda and Eastern region and the incidence appears to be rising rapidly. Tumours of the pylorus are found in people from the west of the country. Carcinoma of the colon is unusual in Uganda and cancer of the rectum and anus is relatively much more frequent. The low frequency of colonic cancer correlates with the rarity of diverticular disease and polypi and all these conditions may be modified by dietary factors.KeywordsAnal CanalCarcinoid TumourAdenoid Cystic CarcinomaSquamous CarcinomaPleomorphic AdenomaThese keywords were added by machine and not by the authors.
