Abstract

This book is a thorough, scholarly, yet practical discussion of diagnosis and treatment of tumors of the large bowel. The text is divided into four sections: polyps, cancer, surgical considerations, and lesions of the anal and perianal tissues. The major emphasis of the first two divisions is on proctoscopy, although symptomatology, physical examination, and other diagnostic procedures are included. Much of the discussion is based on large series of patients seen at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn. Discussion sections are preceded by four full-color plates of lesions as seen through the proctoscope or as gross specimens. Most of the book is written in an informal style which permits rhetorical questions, stating of personal opinions, and sometimes subjective analyses. Although this approach may not be scientific, it can be extremely helpful to the clinician faced with practical problems of diagnosis and treatment. In this book one can find the answers supplied
