Abstract

Cardiac tumors are rare. A lot of types have been described. The symptoms are determined mainly by the anatomic location, and can be grouped in four categories: constitutional or systemic symptoms; cardiac manifestations caused by obstruction of the circulation or interference with the heart valves; embolization, usually neurologic and symptoms due to metastasis. In order to do a diagnostic evaluation, the use of image techniques is elementary, principally echocardiography, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography. Out of the primary cardiac tumors, 75% are benign, the most common is the myxoma, which is the most prone to have embolization. Other neoplasms are the papillary fibroelastomas, the fibromas, the rhabdomyomas, the lipomas and the hemangiomas. The most frequent malignant tumors are the secondary cardiac ones. Among the primary malignant tumors the most common are sarcomas and lymphomas. Complete resection is the treatment of choice, complemented with chemotherapy and radiotherapy in malignant tumors.
