Abstract

Purpose At the current time, there is lack of uniformity in the management of major salivary gland tumors because of the existence of many subtypes. The aim of this study, performed at the National Cancer Institute from January 2014 to January 2019, was to characterize the tumor pathologies of the parotid gland. Methods A retrospective descriptive observational study was conducted with the clinical records of patients admitted for parotid gland pathologies at the National Cancer Institute, from January 2014 to January 2019. The entire cohert, including those who met the inclusion criteria and those that met the exclusion criteria, was studied (N = 101). Descriptive association measures, such as the χ2 test, were used. Results A higher frequency was found among males (61.4%; n = 62), with a male-to-female ratio of 1.5:1 and a significant statistical difference (P Conclusions Primary malignant tumors of the parotid glands were rare in our series, with metastasis being the main cause of parotidectomy; squamous cell carcinoma predominantly originated in the skin. The male gender was the most affected.
