Abstract

Summary Ovarian surface serous papillary tumours share an important number of biological characteristics with the peritoneal surface serous papillary tumours. Its Mullerian origin and histological diagnosis based on its cellular composition and ultrastructural traits are so similar that, in the past they were considered to be the same tumour at a different evolutionary stage. The diagnostic and surgical therapeutic protocols of these tumours have an identical oncological base. Nevertheless, they differ in two aspects which are significant for the patients life. They are, better prognostic and higher levels of survival with ovarian surface serous papillary tumours with respect to those of the peritoneal surface, because of its diagnosis at an earlier clinical stage.
