Abstract
Tumor promoters enhance tumor formation when administered after an initiating action by a carcinogen. The phorbol diester class of tumor promoters has been shown to affect many biochemical and biological processes in mouse skin and cell culture. The effects of these compounds on the proliferation and differentiation of cells in culture are reviewed herein; the possible relation of these effects to the mechanism of tumor promotion are discussed.
