Abstract

In experimental animals, kidney tumors are induced by, among other chemicals, nitroso compounds. Tumors were found in rats after oral administration of dimethyl-nitrosamine [1, 7, 8, 10, 13] and also after oral, intravenous and intraperitoneal treatment with diethylnitrosamine [1, 2, 9, 12] or nitrosomethylurea [2, 6, 11]. Dose and duration of the carcinogen treatment influenced the frequency and the latent period of the kidney tumor. We have tested the carcinogenic effect of different single doses of diethylnitrosamine (DEN) in rats, and also sought to determine the smallest tumor-inducing dose as well as the single dose leading to a high percentage of kidney tumors.
