Abstract

Granular cell tumor is a soft tissue neoplasm that usually affects females in the fourth to sixth decades of life. It can affect any area of the body, with preponderance to the oral cavity as an asymptomatic nodule of slow growth. Despite its controversial histogenesis, the theory of a neural origin is now accepted. A surgical excisional biopsy of the tumor and histological examination are necessary for the correct diagnosis and treatment. Its usual benign behavior and its low recurrence rate set a favorable prognosis. A case of a granular cell tumor in a 21 year old female patient is reported. Histological findings, differential diagnosis and therapeutic implications are discussed together with a review of the literature.
