Abstract

Ultrastructural study on visna virus in sheep plexus choroid cells The Visna virus, a model for the study of Lentivirinae , was observed in cell culture from sheep choroid plexus. Ultrathin sections showed two steps of virus leaving the cells. The budding structures on the cell surface showed crescents of virus-like particles, enclosed by an envelope surrounded by spicules. Free virus particles in the extracellular medium presented different stages of virus maturation: the clear immature stage, the intermediate forms and the matured infectious virions. This progressive evolution explains the continuity in the different forms and stages of virus development, and the final formation of viral nucleotide enclosed by an internal membrane.
