Abstract

Abstract. — Quantitative palynological analysis of two profiles in Maastrichtian muddy chalk, distant of about two kilometers, was performed North of Liège in the Meuse valley (Belgium). Spores, pollen grains, Acritarches and Dinoflagellates were investigated. The two profiles are correlated on the basis of the surprising similarity of the relative statistical behaviour of two Hystrichosphaerid groups. The quantitative behaviour of these organisms is paralleled by small fluctuations of the terrigeneous imput. In their turn, these fluctuations are associated with variations in Angiosperm and Conifer pollen contents. Small changes in salinity of sea-water caused by terrigeneous influxes, would account for the quantitative behaviour of the Hystrichosphaerids. Two different sources of the terrigeneous material originate the palynological content of these profiles.
