Abstract

This communication deals with the first results of palynological investigations of Cretaceous sediments from the south of France and northeastern Spain. 1. (1) The succession of microspore assemblages is described and is found to be similar to sequences previously described in Europe. 2. (2) In Cenomanian deposits three different kinds of pollen contents were found: ( a) without any angiospermous pollen grains; ( b) with tricolpate pollen grains being the most frequent among the angiospermous pollen; ( c) with some Normapolles. These differences do not correspond, however, with differences in the non-angiospermous microflora. 3. (3) Regarding the data available from three successive stratigraphical levels in Péreille (Ariège), it appears that the fluctuations in frequency of the main sporomorphs can be attributed to a marine transgression on to certain vegetation belts (Fig.1). From the latter conclusion, caution is recommended in the stratigraphical correlation of samples of different lithology from geographically distant localities.
