Abstract

The species here under study, Palaemonetes mesogenitor, has previously been linked to the P. varians group. However, four clearly defined differences with the P. varians group have subsequently been established. These comprise: (1) the endopodite and the exopodite of the male pleopod I are approximately of the same length; (2) the male pleopod II has an appendix masculina which is clearly longer than the endopodite; (3) the first maxilliped has an epipodite with only a slight indentation between its branches, contrary to the usual conditions in bilobed epipodites; (4) the caudalmost rim of the telson bears four to six plumose setae. The morphology of P. mesogenitor is described in detail herein.
