Abstract

The reaction 34S(d, pγ) 35S has been used to study levels of 35S below an excitation energy of 4.50 MeV. The excitation energies and γ-ray decay scheme were determined for 13 of the first 16 known excited states. The lifetimes of the 2347 keV (1.22±0.18 ps), the 2718 keV (100±35 fs) and the 3802 keV (36±26 fs) levels were measured, and limits for lifetimes have been set on five other levels. Angular-correlation measurements imply a spin of 3 2 for the 3802 keV level, and are in agreement with J π values of 3 2 +, 1 2 +, 7 2 − and 3 2 − for the ground state and the 1572, 1991 and 2347 keV levels, respectively. The 1991 → 0 keV transition has a mixed M2-E3 character, with δ = +0.11±0.04; the angular correlations for the 2347 → 0 and 2347 → 1572 keV transitions can be fitted simultaneously supposing both have pure E1 character.
