Abstract

The kinetics of titanium nitriding have been studied between 1230 and 1500 °C. Within this temperature range, the diffusion coefficients D N α = 0.144 exp( -53400 RT ) and D N α = 0.121 exp( -53300 RT ) for nitrogen in the a and β phases have been calculated with the aid of a simple diffusion model. By means of nitriding treatments at very high temperatures, we have observed the e-phase up to 2000 °C as well as a dendritic growth of TiN. The lattice constant a of this nitride is 4.2398 ± 0.0005 A ̊ . Homogeneous α-titanium-nitrogen solid solutions have been obtained up to 9 at.% nitrogen. The study of the alloys clearly shows the influence of nitrogen on the structural and mechanical properties of titanium.
