Abstract

SummaryThe rate of detection of endometrial tuberculous infertility in a predominantly urban infertility clinic was assessed over a period of 7 years. To check the validity of this experience, data from the Regional Public Health Laboratory, serving several district general hospitals, were scrutinised. We estimate a current prevalence of 0.1 per cent as diagnosed on endometrial sampling. The evidence obtained from the study throws doubt on the continuing usefulness of routine endometrial culture as a preliminary investigation of infertility. Suggestions for a selection policy are given, based on the results of this study, and on information obtained from 520 senior gynaecologists.
