Abstract

A total of 110 patients with tuberculosis of the aorta has been recorded in the literature. Many of these cases were diagnosed at autopsy. Aneurysm formation or perforation or both are the common complications of this condition, and treatment is surgical resection followed by antituberculosis chemotherapy. Only nine previous patients so operated on have been noted in the literature. A successful resection of a ruptured false tuberculous aneurysm of the abdominal aorta is reported. Since all patients with resected tuberculous aortic aneurysms do not have a preoperative diagnosis of tuberculosis, all resected aortic aneurysms should be carefully examined microscopically. If evidence of tuberculosis is found, antituberculosis chemotherapy should be started immediately.
