Abstract

he goal of tuberculosis (TB) control is to prevent transmission of TB rom infected to uninfected persons and to prevent progression from atent TB infection (LTBI) to active infection among people who have ontracted Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. The essential steps to control the spread of TB relies on the vigilance of hysicians to recognize and treat LTBI and active TB, as well as the mplementation of effective infection control strategies. This became vident in the late 1980s with the resurgence in cases of TB attributed to everal events including the deterioration of the infrastructure of tuberulosis control programs, the increase in urban homelessness, intravenous rug abuse, and most notably the AIDS epidemic. Since 1992, effective nterventions have led to a steady and dramatic decline in TB in all patient opulations, except for those who are foreign born.
