Abstract

G A A b st ra ct s loss (3 lbs). Dietary milk and juice were stopped and a Lactobacillus GG probiotic was given in an attempt to lessen symptoms without success. Stool, bloodwork and imaging of the intestinal tract were normal. SBI was administered at 5 g/day. Diarrhea resolved in one week with the infant having 1-2 normal bowel movements per day; he was eating well and regaining weight. In both infants, SBI was discontinued after 30 days without return of symptoms. These two cases illustrate both the tolerability and utility of an oral immunoglobulin formulation in antibiotic-induced and idiopathic diarrhea in infants. Further studies are needed to assess the overall effect in these conditions.
