Abstract

Certain endoscopic approaches to gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD) have been developed, including trans oral incision fundoplication, anti-reflux mucosectomy (ARMS), and endoscopic suturing of the gastroesophageal junction. ARMS relies on the phenomenon of stricture formation after mucosectomy to produce a more robust mucosal flap. This suggesting that an almost completely circumferential mucosectomy would provide adequate relief of acid reflux symptoms. However, this approach can be technically challenging and irreversible. Wanting to provide a simple and cost-effective approach to treat GERD symptoms, we developed a novel pre-test to narrow the gastric cardia before ARMS to control symptoms temporarily to decide whether to undergo irreversible surgery or endoscopic treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate feasibility, efficacy, and tolerability of this new minimally, reversible endoscopic treatment.
