Abstract

The relevance of granulomas in the histopathology of patients with Crohn’s disease is largely unknown. Most previous studies have relied on small case series. The aim of our study was to test the influence of demographic and clinical characteristics in patients with Crohn’s disease on the presence of granulomas. Study Design and Methods In a computerized database of 1.3 million subjects with histopathology reports from colonoscopy, a subgroup of patients with Crohn’s disease was selected. Diagnostic criteria for Crohn’s disease included the correlation of classic histological findings of inflammatory bowel disease with the proper clinical/endoscopic information.
