Abstract

A proportion of patients with suspected acute upper gastro-intestinal bleed (UGIB) have a negative initial gastroscopy. The traditional approach is to perform colonoscopy as the second investigation, however diagnostic yield is low. 1,2 Small bowel bleeding is likely in this cohort. Capsule endoscopy can safely and effectively visualise small bowel bleeding with high sensitivity in the acute setting.3,4The aim of this study is to investigate whether capsule endoscopy is superior to colonoscopy as a second investigation in patients with suspected UGIB but negative initial gastroscopy.
