Abstract
A variant of the Y strain of Trypanosoma cruzi which exhibits a high frequency (≅90%) of epimastigote-to-trypomastigote transformation when cultured under normal conditions in liquid medium has been isolated. Eight single-cell isolates (clones) of this variant all exhibited this high level of transformation. These T. cruzi stocks can be used to obtain large quantities of trypomastigotes for biochemical, morphological, and immunological studies and for studies concerned with the mechanism of epimastigote-to-trypomastigote transformation.
