Abstract

Trypanosome-free laboratory mice injected with fecal material from field-collected Triatoma spp. (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) produced antibodies for Trypanosoma cruzi, Triatoma lecticularia Stal, T. recurva Stal, and T. gersaeckeri Stal had infection rates of 21.4, 23.1, and 25.8%, respectively, based on indirect hemagglutination assays (IHA). Infection rates in pack rats ( Neotoma spp.), dogs, horses, and humans was determined by the IHA test. Infection rates for packrats ranged from 38.9 to 50%. Eight of 32 dogs had positive titers, and 2 of 5 horses had positive titers. None of the three humans had a positive titer for T. cruzi .
