Abstract
Witnesses' person description performance has repeatedly been found to be generally rather poor. This study examined the effects of using a person in young adult witnesses' visual field as a comparison (or 'standard') to assist their recall of a previously seen, different person. The participants were young adults (N = 92) who saw a male stranger and who later described and answered questions about that person (half of them using a male or a female 'standard'). There was no overall effect of the use of a standard but the use of a 'typical' male standard increased the amount of information about characteristics that would otherwise not be remembered well.
