Abstract

Academy of Management Annual Meeting Proceedings includes abstracts of all papers and symposia presented at the annual conference, plus 6-page abridged versions of the “Best Papers” accepted for inclusion in the program (approximately 10%). Papers published in the Proceedings are abridged because presenting papers at their full length could preclude subsequent journal publication. Yet much of the literature assumes a connection between trust and network configuration without explicitly assessing this connection (Levin & Cross, 2004). This symposium showcases a multidisciplinary collection of original research, each selected to advance understanding and insight on the role, dynamics and mechanisms of trust in intra- and inter-organizational networks. By integrating theoretical developments and debates from the literatures on trust and networks, and explicitly measuring trust, the four presentations collectively provide insight on a range of unaddressed questions, including: how the trustworthiness of an actor influences their network position and the benefits derived from brokering structural holes ; how the elements of trustworthiness (ability, benevolence and integrity) influence employees’ decisions about whom to form ties with to generate and implement innovative ideas; how trust and network attributes co-evolve and dynamically influence each other and organizational outcomes over time; and how trust, risk and contracts influence the formation, development and dissolution of inter-organizational networks and inter-firm collaborations.Who are Structural Entrepreneurs?
