Abstract

Extending the authors' previous work on the theme of truss optimization using Genetic Algorithms (GAs), this article aims to apply the truss optimization scheme to actual truss structural design by considering some construction requirements for truss structures, such as member-crossing, member interference at joint, etc. A modified GA, named ‘Layered GA’, is utilized to simultaneously optimize topology, sizing, and shape of trusses to minimize the total weight of truss structures subjected to several actual constraints. In the numerical example, an optimization of a double layer truss roof structure was carried out to investigate and verify the proposed scheme.
