Abstract

US President Donald Trump's naming of Mike Pompeo as secretary of state and John Bolton as national security adviser reflects his determination to align his foreign-policy team more closely with his own political inclinations. But the new appointees may face resistance to disruptive moves involving Iran, North Korea and other major international security challenges from the Pentagon – in particular, Secretary of Defense James Mattis.
