Abstract

A pulse tracer technique previously employed by Farid and Gunn (1980, Chem. Engng Sci. 35, 1463) has been used to measure true mean velocities near the wall and in the bulk within several fixed beds. Both particles and the tracer injection length were changed in the experiments. The results, expressed as the ratio of velocities in the wall and bulk regions were distributed with statistical variation about a ratio of 1.0. A statistical analysis of the experimental means for several subsets of experiments indicates that the true mean velocity in the wall region is not significantly different from the true mean velocity in the bulk region. The volumetric flowrate or superficial velocity in the wall region is greater and may be calculated from the porosity distribution near the wall.
