Abstract
The presence of large meteorological systems like mesoscale convective complexes (MCCs) in the central South American troposphere, generated at two special regions in Argentina, the so called Pampas and the eastern side of the Andean Range, seems to leave an important signature in the ionospheric F-region. The effect appears to be dependent on the direction of the meteorological system; northward motion producing an expansion and eastward motion a compression of the layer. A total of 5 events, ranging from 1981–1983, three for northward and two for eastward MCC trajectories, have been analysed.
