Abstract

The global tropopause pressure change for the Januaries 1979 - 1992 is shown. In the extratropics over the North Atlantic-European region there is a marked large scale wave pattern with a pressure decrease of 2 hPa/yr over central Europe. The pattern corresponds well with that of the ozone column trend. A discussion of tropopause pressure change in the zonal mean as well as for the large scale wave structure in the extratropics is given. A counterbalance of zonal mean trends in tropopause pressure between the subtropics and midlatitudes is observed and discussed in dependence on the variability of large scale wave fluxes and the induced residual circulation. In the extratropics the tropopause pressure change wave pattern reflects the known compensation relation of stationary pressure systems between troposphere and stratosphere.
