Abstract

El Pico de Orizaba, the highest mountain in Mexico has environmental cqnditions that could possibly have occurred in ancient Mars. Therefore, our interest is to determine why life is constrained at high altitudes, specifically what determines treelines at thermal gradients. Our working hypothesis is that diazotrophs can no longer fix nitrogen at low soil temperatures. To address this problem we have been monitoring the environmental conditions at different altitudes at the South and North faces of the volcano since March-1999 and have been studying the physical and chemical properties of soil.
