Abstract

In 'Tropical African Plants: XXVII' Cynoctonum mitreola (L.) Britton (Loganiaceae), was recorded for the first time from the African continent (Kew Bull. 17: 171 (1963)), but an important nomenclatural matter and two more recent gatherings of the same species necessitate further comments. According to J. E. Dandy, the generic name Cynoctonum J. F. Gmel., Syst. Nat., ed. 13, 2: 443 (1791), is antedated by Mitreola L., Op. Var: 214 (1758); see Dandy in Regnum Vegetabile 51 ('Index to Generic Names of Vascular Plants 1753-1774'): 65 (1967). The species under discussion must therefore be called:
