Abstract

Following Schmid's typology (2000), the present study inquires into factual general nouns incorporating the speaker's attitude towards certain states of affaires, in particular into two subclasses of attitudinal nouns : that of Irony (paradox , absurdity, coincidence) and that of Tragedy (catastrophe, drama, disaster). Its major goal consists in motivating the non-specificity of these nouns within context. With this intention, will be reopened the file 'reference and cohesion' - central to the domain of general nouns. Two other objectives consist in (a) distinguishing attitudinal general nouns from general nouns par excellence, on the basis of a criterion other than the frequency of occurrence ; (b) separating general nouns from superordinate nouns.
