Abstract

This study is focused on to examine the status of international railway transport of Turkey and in this context, it is aims to review the effectiveness of railway border gates in Turkey. In the study, the place of railway transportation in the general transport systems and its cross-border dimension are discussed in a historical perspective, and the problems in this area are examined. Currently, including the closed one, Turkey has 7 railway border gates, and the effectiveness of rail transportation occur at different scales at this border gates. According to data of 2012, 1‰ of the total number of passengers departing from Turkey and arriving to Turkey, and 9‰ of total foreign trade realized by using rail transportation system in Turkey. This case introduces that, on one hand rail transportation has a little importance in terms of general international transportation of Turkey, on the other hand, its indicates the existence of a large potential. In this respect the developing of high-speed rail systems will provide more benefit from railway transportation, not only domestic but also in international transportation in Turkey.
