Abstract
Creativity and originality are, as is well-known, the most distinct features of natural languages. Someone can easily form phrases or sentences that never said or heard before by putting lexical items from the lexicon of a language together in accordance with grammatical rules. However, a significant part of the lexicon of a language is made out of formulaic language units (proverbs, idioms, compounds, reduplications and formulaic expressions) and speakers of a language frequently put to use these units in communication. Therefore, it has to be stated that formulaicity is a reality in language besides creativity and originality. Even so researchers have not given much attention to general features of formulaicty and its place in language. Some formulaic language units are described as exception and some others are called as cliches without careful research. It is a necessity to describe the features of formulaicity in detail to explain functioning of language and its use. This paper will deal with the definition of formulaicity, its features and forms, and types of forulaicity. It is expected that this study will contribute to the description of formulaicity from various aspects.
